Living with Epilepsy: Tips on Controlling Seizures and Improving Quality of Life

admin Feb 22, 2025

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder resulting in recurring seizures. While managing seizures can be a daunting prospect, proper management can allow people to live healthy and satisfying lives. Below are some of the major ways one can control seizures while also improving the quality of life.

1. Medication Particulars- Anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) are the main treatment for epilepsy. Taking medicines exactly as prescribed by a doctor reduces seizures in frequency. It is good to set an alarm if there are threats to occasionally remembering taking them because forgetting one dose may start a series of seizures.

2. Recognizing Triggers-

Several factors may trigger seizures. This could include lack of sleep, stress, flashing lights, or even alcohol. Keeping a seizure diary helps track such patterns and avoid triggers.

3. Maintaining Proper Lifestyle-

Proper sleep, a healthy diet, and good hydration are essential to ensure the good health of the brain. Meditation and deep breathing are excellent methods of managing stress, a common trigger for seizures.

4. Safety-

Precautions should be taken to enhance safety and prevent injuries to the individuals by not swimming alone, wearing protective gear if necessary, and maintenance of home safety measures such as padded furniture or shower rails for patient safety.

5. Alternative Therapy-

Some may find relief from seizures through a ketogenic diet, vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), or CBD oil (under medical supervision). Make sure to consult with a doctor before trying any of the alternative treatments.

6. Get Support-

Getting involved with an epilepsy support group, or connecting with trained therapists for counseling brings added emotional strength. When family and friends know seizure first-aid strategies, people with epilepsy will know they will be supported in the event of an emergency.

7. Stay In Touch with Doctor-

Staying in touch with a neurologist for routine check-ups makes it easier to track progress and modify treatment if needed. Discussing any side effects with any medication also develops the groundwork for better management.
