39-year-old with rare zoonotic bacterial infection leading to multiple organ failure successfully revived at Fortis Gurugram

The mortality rates for such cases is 50-60 % if undiagnosed and timely medical intervention not provided.

Gurugram, 20th November 2024: Doctors at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram successfully revived a 39-year-old man suffering from Leptospirosis – a zoonotic bacterial infection, caused by the bacteria Leptospira, which is found and transmitted by food and water contaminated by the urine of infected animals -mostly rats. Majority of such reported cases are mild, with symptoms similar to Dengue, Influenza or Malaria and rarely lead to severe multiorgan dysfunction or Weil's Syndrome. The team of doctors led by Dr Neha Rastogi Panda, Consultant, Infectious Diseases, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram adopted a multi-disciplinary approach by putting the patient on ventilator, dialysis and administering blood pressure medicines. The patient was discharged after 22 days in a stable condition.

The patient was admitted to Fortis Gurugram in a critical condition with multiple co-morbidities. He was drowsy, gasping for breath, had low blood pressure and low urine output, was vomiting with high grade fever accompanied by seizures. He also had multi-organ failure involving acute liver and kidney injury with low platelet and creatinine count. His blood, urine, brain fluid and lung fluid were tested, which revealed he was suffering from Leptospirosis.  He was immediately put on ventilator and tracheostomy support was provided (to help him breathe) under critical care monitoring. Additionally, Dialysis and BP control medicines were administered.

Giving details of the case, Dr Neha Rastogi Panda, Consultant, Infectious Diseases, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram said, “Leptospirosis is atypical bacteria causing spectrum of infectious including fever, rash, jaundice, kidney injury, low blood pressure, multi-organ failure, acute respiratory distress with bleeding from various parts of the body. The patient had multi-organ failure due to the infection, however correct and timely diagnosis owing to overlapping symptoms, right tests and right treatment at right time were crucial alongwith a strong multidisciplinary and critical care support. These cases carry high fatality rate; however, the multipronged approach led to successful clinical outcomes and saved the patient’s life.”

Yash Rawat, Facility Director, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram said, “This was a very crucial case considering the critical condition of the patient and the multiple complexities involved. The team of doctors led by Dr Neha Rastogi Panda successfully treated the patient. I express my sincere gratitude to the team of doctors for their support in the successful outcome of this case. Fortis Gurugram is well-equipped with advanced technologies and expert doctors to cater to the needs of the patients.”
