40-Year-Old Hubli-Based Woman Successfully Undergoes Partial Knee Replacement via Robot-aided-Surgery at Fortis Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru

Hubli,  January 2025: Doctors at Fortis Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, have successfully performed a robot-assisted partial knee replacement on a 40-year-old woman from Hubli, alleviating chronic pain caused by severe knee arthritis. The patient, once highly active, had endured debilitating pain for 2–3 years despite being on painkillers, undergoing physiotherapy and receiving injections. Traditional total knee replacement was considered unsuitable due to her age, but under the expertise of Dr. Narayan Hulse, Principal Director – Orthopaedics, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, the innovative procedure restored her mobility and provided immediate relief enabling her to walk on the same day.

After considering her options, the patient consulted Dr. Narayan Hulse at Fortis Bannerghatta Road. Post a detailed evaluation, Dr. Hulse recommended a partial knee replacement, a procedure where only the damaged part of the knee is replaced. This surgery is ideal for younger patients and offers excellent results. Given the patient's age, this approach was preferable as it allowed for pain relief while avoiding the complications that could arise from a total knee replacement.

Speaking about the case, Dr. Narayan Hulse, Principal Director – Orthopaedics, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, said, "This young patient had been suffering from severe knee pain for the past few years, significantly affecting her daily activities. The primary challenge in her case was her age, as total knee replacement is typically reserved for older patients. After careful evaluation, we determined that a partial knee replacement (unicondylar knee replacement), was the most appropriate solution for her as the condition was localized to one side of the knee, which made her an ideal candidate for this procedure. By using Mako robotic-assisted technology, we were able to plan and execute the surgery with unparalleled precision, ensuring optimal alignment and minimal disruption to the surrounding tissues.”

“The robotic-assisted technology allowed us to create a detailed 3D model of her knee using CT scan data, which was crucial for visualizing the anatomy of the joint and determining the exact placement of the prosthetic. This technology helped us make smaller incisions and more accurate cuts to the bone, which ultimately sped up her recovery. The patient was able to walk the same day and was discharged within a few days, which is a significant advantage of partial knee replacement surgery." added Dr Hulse.

The patient was able to walk on the same day of the surgery and was discharged from the hospital the next day. She is making a rapid recovery. The partial knee replacement provided her with significant pain relief and the ability to resume normal daily activities.

Mr. Akshay Oleti, Business Head, Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru, added, "At Fortis Hospital, we are committed to providing advanced, world-class healthcare to patients not only from Bengaluru but also from surrounding regions. With cutting-edge technologies like robotic-assisted surgeries, we ensure precision, faster recovery, and improved outcomes for our patients. Our aim is to offer exceptional care that helps individuals return to their active lives quickly and effectively, regardless of their location."
