64-Year-Old Hubli based Cardiologist successfully undergoes Knee Replacement Surgery via Mako Robot at Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru

Hubli, 19 December 2024: Doctors at Fortis Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru successfully treated a 62-year-old cardiologist from Hubli via Mako Robot assisted surgery. The patient had been suffering from chronic knee pain for more than three years due to Osteoarthritis and a bowed knee.  A team of doctors led by Dr. Narayan Hulse, Director – Orthopaedics, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru successfully treated the patient and discharged him in just 3 days post-surgery.

Three years ago, Patient Dr. Hari(Name changed) started experiencing debilitating knee pain, leading him to seek medical consultation in Hubli. He was diagnosed with Bilateral Osteoarthritis, a condition where bone cartilage wears down, causing bone-to-bone friction. He was advised to undergo knee replacement surgery. However, despite consulting multiple doctors in Hubli and Bangalore, he couldn't muster the confidence to proceed with the surgery.

Over time, the Patient’s condition had worsened, severely impacting his ability to perform simple daily activities like sitting cross-legged, walking, and even sleeping. After careful consideration, he finally consulted Dr. Narayan Hulse at Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru. Dr. Hulse provided a comprehensive explanation of both conventional and robotic surgery options. Dr. Hari weighed the pros and cons of each approach and opted for robot-aided surgery, recognizing its potential advantages of enhanced precision and faster recovery compared to the traditional method.

Speaking about the case, Dr. Narayan Hulse, Director – Orthopaedics, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, said, " Both of Dr. Hari’s knee replacement surgeries were successfully performed on the same day using Mako Robotic Arm-Assisted technology, which played a pivotal role in both the planning and execution of the procedure. The process began by creating an incredibly detailed 3D virtual model of his knees using CT scan data, allowing us to visualize his joint anatomy with remarkable precision. This model was especially crucial in Dr. Hari's case due to his bowed legs, a deformity that complicated the knee alignment. By analyzing the 3D model, we were able to devise a personalized, patient-specific surgical plan that addressed both his knee degeneration and the misalignment of his legs.”

“The surgery lasted approximately two hours, and one of the significant advantages of using Mako Robotic Technology is the ability to make smaller, more precise incisions. Furthermore, the robotic system enables highly accurate bone cuts, which helped preserve more of the patient’s natural bone, essential for long-term joint health. As a result, Dr. Hari experienced less swelling, a faster recovery, and a significantly lower risk of complications compared to traditional knee replacement methods." added Dr Hulse.

The patient was able to walk immediately post the surgery. Considering his prolonged osteoarthritis, he made remarkable progress in a very short span of time and has become independent in his daily activities. He left for Hubli in just five days post-surgery.

Mr. Akshay Oleti, Business Head, Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru, added, "We are proud to have introduced Mako, the most advanced robotic-assisted technology available, which allows us to perform partial knee, total knee, and total hip replacements using a single platform. This aligns perfectly with our commitment to providing state-of-the-art technology that prioritizes precision, accelerates recovery, and enhances the overall patient experience. At Fortis Hospital, we remain dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of medical care through the ongoing integration of innovative technologies, always ensuring the well-being and satisfaction of our patients."
