Expert Highlights Crucial Link Between Thyroid Health and Mental Well-being

Ludhiana, January 2025 – In observance of Thyroid Awareness Month, healthcare professionals at Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana are urging individuals to prioritise thyroid health by seeking regular screenings and adopting healthy lifestyle habits. The thyroid, a small but powerful gland located in the neck, plays a vital role in regulating metabolism and numerous bodily functions. Proper diagnosis and management of thyroid conditions can lead to substantial improvements in both physical and mental well-being.

Experts have emphasised that thyroid disorders can trigger a range of mental health symptoms, often mimicking or exacerbating existing psychological conditions. This intricate connection underscores the need for comprehensive thyroid assessments in the management of mental health disorders.

Since thyroid hormones are crucial for brain development and function, therefore regulating neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine that affect mood, motivation, and cognition is crucial. They support neuron growth, memory, and myelination, which ensures efficient nerve signaling. Hormonal deficiencies can disrupt these processes, increasing the risk of anxiety, depression, and cognitive issues.

 Mental Health Symptoms in Hypothyroidism:

Depression: Depression is the most common mental health issue linked to hypothyroidism, often marked by feelings of sadness, worthlessness, hopelessness, and low energy levels.

  • Cognitive Impairment: Symptoms like poor concentration, memory issues, and difficulty processing information, commonly referred to as "brain fog," are prevalent.
  • Anxiety: Some individuals experience anxiety, panic attacks, or generalized anxiety disorder, although these are less common than depression.
  • Apathy and Decreased Motivation: A loss of interest in activities and diminished motivation to pursue goals may develop over time.

 Mental Health Symptoms in Hyperthyroidism:

Anxiety and Restlessness: Increased anxiety, irritability, and restlessness are frequent symptoms.

  • Insomnia: Many individuals report difficulty falling or staying asleep.
  • Mood Swings: Quick shifts between anger and depression are common.
  • Panic Attacks: Sudden episodes of extreme fear, rapid heartbeat, and breathlessness may occur.
  • Psychosis: Rare cases involve severe symptoms like delusions and hallucinations associated with hyperthyroidism.

Dr. Saurabh Arora, Consultant, Endocrinology, Fortis Hospital Ludhiana, explained, “We emphasise the importance of evaluating thyroid function in patients presenting with depression, anxiety, or cognitive issues, as thyroid disorders often mimic mental health conditions. A simple blood test to measure TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) levels is an effective screening tool for thyroid dysfunction. Treating the underlying thyroid condition is crucial for addressing associated mental health concerns. For hypothyroidism, hormone replacement therapy with levothyroxine typically restores thyroid hormone levels, often improving mood and cognitive function. In cases of hyperthyroidism, treatment options such as radioactive iodine therapy, anti-thyroid medications, or surgery are determined based on the cause and severity of the condition. Even after thyroid treatment, some individuals may require additional mental health support, such as counseling or medication. However, correcting the thyroid imbalance is a critical first step in improving overall mental well-being."
