In a First in Rajasthan, Situs Inversus (Revered Organs) Patient operated for gall bladder surgery through Laparoscopy
Jaipur, March 15 2022: In what may be termed as the first reported case of Situs Inversus in a 45-year-old female patient who had come to consult the doctors at Fortis Escorts Hospital Jaipur recently. “Situs Inversus Totalis” is a very rare condition in which the patient’s internal organs’ position is reversed (For example, the liver, gallbladder and appendix on located on the left side, and heart and stomach are located on the right side). The 45-year-old woman was diagnosed with gall-bladder stones (cholelithiasis) and had visited Fortis Hospital post she was diagnosed of her rare anomaly at other hospital. The doctors at other hospitals were not sure about the line of treatment on the patient owing to the rarity of her condition. The surgery was not easy, as surgeons were not well-versed in operating a patient with such a rare condition. It was then that the patient consulted Dr Lokesh Goyal, Consultant, GI, Laparoscopic and Onco Surgeon at Fortis Escorts Hospital Jaipur.
Elaborating on the case and the rare condition of the patient, Dr Lokesh Goyal said “Situs Inversus is a very rare condition reported in 0.01% of the population. It was critical to operate the patient as the gall-bladder stones had resulted in the inflammation of the pancreas (Pancreatitis). After performing all the necessary medical tests and diagnosis, a roadmap for the surgery was created where the doctors decided to perform a laparoscopy surgery on the patient. The doctors team faced several challenges owing to the rarity of the case as no such cases had been operated earlier. While operating, every process had to be performed in the opposite manner (mirror image) of the normal process. The team of doctors stood on the opposite side of the operating table while performing the surgery, the surgery was conducted in a reverse manner. The surgery went off well and the patient was discharged the very next day. The doctors performed the surgery meticulously with utmost precision so that no other organs are harmed because of the surgery as it was difficult to get a clear view of the inverted organs on the monitor screen.”
Situs inversus (also called situs transversus or oppositus) is a congenital condition in which the major visceral organs are reversed or mirrored from their normal positions. The normal arrangement of internal organs is known as situs solitus. Although cardiac problems are more common, many people with situs inversus have no medical symptoms or complications resulting from the condition.
