Paonta Sahib, 21 December, 2024: Brain stroke is a predominant factor for long-term disability and even death. The life-threatening medical condition causes irreversible damage to the brain cells.
However, emerging advanced healthcare technologies such as Mechanical Thrombectomy, is available 24x7 at select hospitals, Fortis Mohali, being one of them. Mechanical Thrombectomy in select cases has helped save life of critical patients even after 24 hours of suffering a stroke.
Mechanical Thrombectomy is a minimally-invasive procedure that involves inserting a catheter into the brain artery to remove the clot. This allows restoration of blood flow and saves a patient from disability or death by increasing treatment window in brain stroke patients till 24 hours.
In one such case, the team of doctors led by Dr Prof Vivek Gupta, Additional Director of Interventional Neuroradiology, Fortis Hospital Mohali, recently treated a 60-year-old woman, who was rushed to Fortis Mohali, post 10 hours after suffering a stroke. The Patient was unable to speak, had left side paralysis, facial drooping along with difficulty in walking.
Dr Gupta conducted Mechanical Thrombectomy on the patient to remove a clot from her brain or neck – sometimes arteries are blocked in the neck, sometimes in the brain, and at times, both the brain and neck have to be opened as per the medical condition. The Patient had a smooth, post-operative recovery and was discharged five days after the procedure. She has recovered fully and is leading a normal life today.
Discussing the advanced treatment option, Dr Gupta, said, “Mechanical Thrombectomy can be done till 24-hours after the onset of stroke in selected patients. It is a minimally invasive procedure wherein an interventional neuroradiologist uses specialized equipment to remove a clot from a patient’s brain or neck artery.”
Dr Prof Gupta, said, “Fortis Hospital Mohali is one of the few centres in the North Region to offer 24x7 advanced Neuro-interventional treatment and comprehensive stroke care, including CT Perfusions and Mechanical Thrombectomy, to patients round the clock. The expert team of doctors comprising expert neurologists, interventional neuro-radiologists, neurosurgeons and anesthetists provide 24x7 stroke treatment. All services related to stroke diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation, are provided under one roof.”
