Young Lives Saved: Fortis Escorts Faridabad Successfully Treats Young Stroke Patients

-The young stroke patients were between 15-34 years of age –

Faridabad, 19 December 2024: A Team of Neurologists, led by Dr. Vinit Banga, Director of Neurology and Head of Neuro-Intervention at Fortis Escorts Hospital Faridabad, successfully treated three young stroke patients, between 15 and 34 years of age. During a media briefing, held at Fortis Escorts Faridabad today, Dr. Banga shared details of the case, highlighting the successful recovery of these young stroke survivors, who were given immediate treatment and are on their path to recovery. In the first such case Ishant, a 15-year-old schoolboy who experienced a sudden onset of right-sided body weakness, facial deviation, difficulty speaking, confusion, and slurred speech while at school. He was quickly rushed to Fortis Escorts Faridabad, where an MRI revealed that he had suffered a stroke. Further medical examination revealed that the blood vessels were narrowed, because of a rare autoimmune condition called vasculitis or vasculopathy, which causes inflammation and damage to the blood vessels. He was treated with steroids, blood thinners and is currently stable. The second case involved Shivam, a 27-year-old man from Rajasthan, a gym enthusiast from Rajasthan, suddenly developed a persistent headache that lasted for 7-10 days. He also developed symptoms such as imbalance, double vision, difficulty walking and slurred speech. He was brought to Fortis Escorts Faridabad, where a detailed medical evaluation revealed that the back part of his brain (medulla) had been damaged due to a clot caused by vertebral artery dissection. It is a condition in which the inner layer of the vertebral artery in the neck tears. This tear allows blood to flow between the layers of the artery wall, which can form a clot and block blood flow to the brain. This type of dissection can occur after sudden trauma, such as wrestling or salon massages, however in this case, it was triggered by heavy weightlifting. He is currently receiving treatment with the help of blood thinners and is in stable condition. The third case involved Mr. Vikas, a 34-year-old man who experienced sudden chest pain and was diagnosed with a heart attack. While being transported to the hospital, he developed weakness on the right side of his body and lost the ability to speak and understand. Upon admission, further evaluation revealed that the heart attack had caused blood clots to form in his heart, which subsequently travelled to his brain, blocking the brain's arteries. The patient was treated conservatively with blood thinners and was discharged in stable condition within 3-4 days. Giving details of the cases, Dr Vinit Banga, Director, Neurology & Head - Neuro-Intervention, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad said, “While stroke is often associated as a condition that affects older people, it can occur at any age. In fact, about 15-20 % of all strokes occur in people younger than 50 years of age. Recently, we treated 3 young stroke patients in the age group 15-35 years at Fortis Escorts Faridabad. Soon after admission to the hospital, they were thoroughly evaluated and given immediate treatment. The patients responded well to treatment and are now stable.” “Stress and sedentary lifestyles are eminent contributors leading to an upsurge in stroke cases amongst the younger population. Adopting healthier lifestyle measures, engaging in regular exercises, having a balanced diet, engaging in regular meditation, moderate exercises and regular health check-ups can reduce the risk of strokes. Strokes in young adults differ significantly from those in the elderly, as the causes and risk factors are often not the same. In older adults, factors like diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking and alcohol use are common contributors. However, in children and young adults, the causes are usually different, requiring distinct investigative and treatment approaches. It’s important to approach these cases with a tailored strategy to prevent recurrent strokes. These young patients have much of their lives ahead of them, so failing to diagnose and treat them properly could result in long-term disability and a reduced quality of life,” Dr. Banga emphasized.
