Fortis Escorts Hospital, Jaipur Oct 29, 2021

Jaipur, 29th October 2021: To commemorate World Stroke Day, Doctors at Fortis Escorts Hospital Jaipur raised awareness on timely intervention and quick medical access to treat stroke.  Stroke Warning Signs, Prevention and Recovery are the three parameters which need to be kept in mind while treating and caring for a stroke patient. As per NCBI, Stroke is ranked as the second leading cause of death worldwide with an annual mortality rate of about 5.5 million. Not only does the burden of stroke lie in the high mortality but the high morbidity also results in up to 50% of survivors being chronically disabled Correct medications, regular checkups, exercising regularly and following a healthy heart diet can help prevent stroke in an individual.

Dr. Neetu Ramrakhiani, Director, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Jaipur said, “Stroke is normally said to occur in older age groups; however, an increasing incidence has been reported in the younger population owing to poor lifestyle habits. A stroke is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment. The caregivers needs to adhere to the golden hour, which remains crucial in treatment of stroke. If stroke is caused by a clot, the patient would receive clot busting/ blood-thinning drug from a doctor. A rapid medical response significantly improves a person’s chances of survival after a stroke. In case blockage in large vessels of brain is seen, the same can be removed with thrombectomy. A good control of hypertension, diabetes and lifestyle changes regarding activity, regular sleep, tobacco intake goes a long way in preventive recurrent stroke.

Dr. Vikas Gupta, Senior consultant Neurology, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Jaipur said, “An individual suffers from stroke when blood supply to the brain is interrupted. Amongst the different types of strokes that exist, ischemic stroke is the most common. It is the type which develops due to the blockage in the arteries supplying blood to the brain. Therefore, a person who goes through a stroke requires immediate treatment which must happen within 4½ hours of the occurrence of the symptoms like weakness in one side of body, slurring of speech, facial deviation etc. FAST approach (Face Drooping, Arm Weakness, Slurred Speech, Time to call emergency hospital services) needs to be kept in mind while recognizing the early symptoms of stroke.

Neerav Bansal, Zonal Director, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Jaipur, Rajasthan said, “During COVID there has been an increase in the cases of non-communicable diseases, stroke being one of them. As a responsible healthcare organization, Fortis Hospital is doing its best to sensitize the public around lifestyle related diseases so that patients can come for early screening to ensure early diagnosis. Rise in consumption of alcohol, tobacco can be attributed as some of the causes which has led to an upsurge in stroke amongst younger patients.”
