Robotic Sleeve Gastrectomy: A Life-Changing Weight Loss Surgery By Dr. Manish Joshi

admin Mar 07, 2025

Obesity is not just a cosmetic concern—it is a serious health issue that affects multiple organ systems, leading to life-threatening complications. This is especially true for individuals with severe obesity, who often struggle with conditions like obstructive sleep apnea, diabetes, and heart disease. Robotic-assisted surgery has transformed the landscape of bariatric procedures, providing safer, more effective solutions for high-risk patients.

A Challenging Case of Severe Obesity

One such case involved a 160 kg adult with a BMI of 60, suffering from severe obstructive sleep apnea, requiring a BiPAP machine since the COVID pandemic. His weight-related health challenges made everyday activities difficult, and his condition posed significant risks for long-term complications. To help him regain control of his health, a robotic sleeve gastrectomy was performed—a minimally invasive weight loss surgery with minimal anatomical modification.

Precision with Robotic-Assisted Surgery

The robotic approach offered enhanced precision, stability, and safety during the procedure.

The key highlights included:

  • Advanced SureForm Staplers – Equipped with artificial intelligence, these staplers ensured precise stapling without jerky movements, reducing the risk of leaks and complications.
  • Gastric Calibration Tube – Used to carefully create a tight and uniform sleeve, ensuring optimal weight loss results.
  • Meticulous Adjustment at the Fundus – Given that this is the thinnest part of the stomach, special attention was paid to maintain structural integrity.
  • Intraoperative Methylene Blue Test – This final test confirmed a secure, leak-proof sleeve, ensuring the patient’s safety and long-term success.

A New Beginning with Robotic Bariatric Surgery

Thanks to the minimally invasive nature of robotic surgery, the patient experienced a smooth recovery with reduced post-operative pain and a quicker return to daily activities. By leveraging robotic precision and AI-guided technology, this surgery marked the beginning of his journey towards a healthier, more active lifestyle.

Empowering Patients Through Innovation

With advancements in robotic-assisted surgery, even the most complex bariatric cases can be handled with greater safety, precision, and efficiency. At Fortis, we remain committed to offering cutting-edge weight loss solutions, helping patients reclaim their health and well-being.
